Email Google Plus Twitter Facebook vimeo Instagram Home Winners Finalists Judges Blog Past grants About the grant The Save Our Seas Foundation believes that photography is a powerful tool for marine conservation. We invite emerging conservation and wildlife photographers who have a passion for marine subjects to apply for our 2016 grant. This is a unique opportunity for photographers to go on assignment, earn an income and gain experience under the guidance of National Geographic photographer Thomas Peschak. ‘We created the SOSF Marine Conservation Photography Grant to give emerging photographers a creative and financial boost during a critical and often challenging time in their careers. I truly hope that each grant will give two photographers a life-changing opportunity and lead them down a successful and rewarding path in the realm of conservation photography.’ Thomas P. Peschak Criteria Applicants should be serious emerging photographers who may have become successful in their local region but have not been widely published in major magazines and have not earned numerous high-profile international awards. We prefer applicants to be under the age of 30, but older applicants who can still be regarded as ‘emerging’ may also be considered. Photographers with underwater photography skills in their repertoire are especially encouraged to apply. Applications A ‘best of’ portfolio of 20 photographs. The portfolio must showcase the applicant’s strongest images and must include some marine, coastal or underwater photographs. One photo story comprising 10 images. The story must be nature or environmentally themed. Marine-themed stories are welcome, but not essential. A completed online questionnaire. Prizes Two winners will be selected for each grant. Each winner will receive a US$2,000 cash prize and will be given a paid three-week photographic assignment to document an SOSF-supported marine research or conservation project. The SOSF has funded more than 160 projects in more than 40 countries and the winning photographers will be assigned to tell one of these stories. Thomas P. Peschak, National Geographic Magazine photographer and director of conservation for the Save Our Seas Foundation, Kathy Moran, senior editor (natural history) of National Geographic Magazine and David Griffin, former director of photography of National Geographic Magazine, will mentor photographers throughout the process. This assignment period will be a learning and refining experience as well as an opportunity to earn income through photography. Both winners will be given the chance to showcase their work at an international conference or an exhibition. Each winner’s story will also be published as a photo essay in the Save Our Seas Foundation’s magazine. Meet the judges Thomas P. It has helped to further my career, and I have no doubt it will continue to do so. I’m sure it is the most valuable grant for emerging photographers today.” Joris van Alphen “The Marine Conservation Photography Grant helped strengthen my arsenal and eye for conservation storytelling. The direct access to insightful editors and photographers has not only given me an invaluable network, but also the unique opportunity to work with the Save Our Seas Foundation in the future. This is by far one of the most comprehensive and beneficial grants for a photographer who focuses on conservation issues. “ Mac Stone Find out more about the 2014 grant here .
